Photorejuvenation using intense pulsed light
Photorejuvenation using intense pulsed light (IPL) is now the gold standard of non-ablative skin treatments. Intense Pulsed Lightâ„¢ (IPL) skintreatments using the photorejuvenation process represent a breakthrough in age-defying skin care.
This new technique treats skin damage non-invasively - there is no disruption of the skin's epidermal surface. IPL treatments address the effects of photo aging and sun damage with low risk of complications and very little recovery time.
This FDA-cleared, patented technology provides dramatic results for a variety of
benign conditions, including age spots, sun-induced freckles, symptoms of
rosacea, flushing and blushing, unsightly veins, acne scarring, melasma and
other blemishes.
The visible signs of aging cannot be fully avoided, but can be dramatically
minimized. The key is to do it as gently as possible. As far as the skin is
concerned there are two types of aging - intrinsic and extrinsic.
Intrinsic aging involves the inevitable; as we grow older, our skin naturally
becomes thinner and drier. Diminished amounts of collagen make the skin less
elastic. What used to bounce back begins to sag. Static, deep wrinkles may
begin to appear. The rate of these events is genetically determined for each
person. The process first becomes noticeable between the ages of 30 and 35.
Extrinsic aging results from exposure to the environment. Extrinsic aging is the
critical element in determining who looks older or younger than their biological
age. Exposure to sunlight is a key contributor to extrinsic aging. Photo aging
occurs when elastin and collagen breakdown and are not replaced, causing fine
lines and wrinkles to intensify. Photo aging also causes pigment changes with
the development of age spots (sun-induced freckles) and uneven skin tone.
Spider veins and dilated capillaries are another sign of photo aged skin.
Lifestyle choices also have an impact on extrinsic aging. Cigarette smoking
contributes to the breakdown of elastin and collagen and impairs the body's
healing capacity.
The simplest way to see the contrast between intrinsic and extrinsic aging is to
compare skin commonly exposed to the sun (face, hands, and neck) and skin
not exposed to the sun (usually on the breasts, inner arms or buttocks).
IPL/Photorejuvenation:
Addresses skin conditions that are most visible
Treats the entire face, not only small spots
Causes little discomfort
Requires some downtime
Provides gradual, natural-looking improvement
Produces long-lasting results
Photorejuvenation with IPL is the most versatile of all treatment options. IPL can
treat numerous skin conditions at once. It is effective on red blemishes that
originate from blood vessels, as well as brown pigment blemishes in the form of
freckles, age spots and other sun damage. IPL also treats the neck, chest and
hands, where sun damage is often most visible.
Your Skin Care Consultant will determine an IPL treatment plan individual for
each client, accounting for the number and severity of skin conditions being
treated, as well as skin type. On average, two to four treatments are
recommended, scheduled at two to three-week intervals. Yearly or bi-yearly
maintenance sessions are suggested to retain your results. Each session
usually lasts about 30-45 minutes, with patients returning to normal activity the
next day. IPL treatments provide gradual, natural improvement with excellent
long-term results.
As with any cosmetic procedure it is always advised to limit any direct sun
exposure prior to, during and after every session. Using a sunscreen of 45 SPF
will dramatically limit the amount of sun damage to the skin.
Levulan Photodynamic Therapy: Skin Rejuvenation
The most recent advance in photorejuvenation is photodynamic therapy (PDT)
combined with IPL, known as photodynamic skin rejuvenation. Photodynamic
skin rejuvenation involves the application of Levulan, a photosensitizing agent,
which is then activated with IPL or Blue-U light. This results in significant
improvement in precancerous conditions such as AK's (actinic keratosis), sun
damaged skin, moderate to severe cystic acne and potentially superficial skin
cancers. Additionally it improves pore size, skin texture, pigmentation, rosacea,
sebaceous hyperplasia, and potentially prevents the development of skin cancer.
Levulan is revolutionizing how we accomplish the success of healthy beautiful
skin.
Photodynamic Therapy with Levulan for:
Removing precancerous skin lesions
Improving pores
Improving skin texture
Improving pigmentation
Treating moderate to severe cystic acne
Acne scarring
Treating sebaceous hyperplasia
